GC School Board member accused of theft
GROVE CITY — An outgoing Grove City School Board member is accused of stealing money from a youth softball association.
Vern “Junior” Saylor, 47, was charged Monday with seven counts of misdemeanor theft by failure to make required disposition of funds received.
Saylor is accused of using more than $1,700 of the Grove City Girls Fastpitch Softball organization’s funds for his personal bills.
He was president and sole financial officer for the organization from 2010 to January 2015.
Police said Saylor allegedly used the organization’s debit card in 2010 to pay personal bills, including Verizon Wireless, Armstrong Cable, People’s Natural Gas, Travelers Insurance and Erie Insurance. He also used it for two purchases in North Carolina and Virginia, according to court documents.
The total amount of the documented transactions was more than $1,700.
Neither Saylor nor a current member of the organization could be reached for comment.
The spending was reported to police in March by Bryan Folk, who was president of the organization at the time.
Folk told police the spending was not related to the softball organization and appeared to be for personal bills, documents said.
Folk also showed police several other cash withdraws from the organization’s account he could not explain.
Saylor was interviewed by police in September. He said he could not explain the transactions and said he may have used the wrong debit card in paying some bills, according to documents.
Saylor also is listed as president of the Mercer County Girls Fastpitch organization on its website. The Mercer County group organizes games between 10 teams, including Grove City. The league is divided into four age groups: 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under and 18 and under.
He has been on the school board for four years, and his term ends Dec. 1. He did not seek re-election.
He is employed as an account manager for HD Supply, according to the school district website.
He is scheduled to appear Dec. 2 before District Judge D. Neil McEwen for a preliminary hearing.
