Grove City School Board member charged with theft

GROVE CITY — An outgoing Grove City School Board member is accused of stealing money from a youth softball association.

Vern “Junior” Saylor, 47, was charged Monday with seven counts of misdemeanor theft by failure to make required disposition of funds received.

Saylor is accused of using more than $1,700 of the Grove City Girls Fastpitch Softball organization’s funds for his personal bills.

He was president and sole financial officer for the organization from 2010 to January 2015.

Police said Saylor allegedly used the organization’s debit card in 2010 to pay personal bills, including Verizon Wireless, Armstrong Cable, People’s Natural Gas, Travelers Insurance and Erie Insurance. He also used it for two purchases in North Carolina and Virginia, according to court documents.

Neither Saylor nor a current member of the organization could be reached for comment.

The spending was reported to police in March by Bryan Folk, who was president of the organization at the time.

Saylor was interviewed by police in September. He said he could not explain the transactions and said he may have used the wrong debit card in paying some bills, according to documents.

He has been on the school board for four years, and his term ends Dec. 1. He did not seek re-election.

He is scheduled to appear Dec. 2 before District Judge D. Neil McEwen for a preliminary hearing.
