Cranberry Twp. may see small tax increase
CRANBERRY TWP — Township residents may see a small increase in their property tax in 2016 to help support the volunteer fire department.
The township supervisors Wednesday night heard a presentation of the proposed 2016 budget. They will consider the initial adoption of that budget Nov. 19.
Township manager Jerry Andree said the increase for the fire service would be a 0.25 mill increase, which is an average annual increase of $6 per household.
The tax rate is 13 mills.
The special funds for the fire department for 2016 revenues would be $522,920, compared to $469,455 in 2015.
Andree noted some of the accomplishments the fire department has had this year.
It added two new vehicles, a command vehicle and ladder truck. A citizen’s advisory committee of about 15 members was created to assist in planning for the department.
“They are really biting into the issues and very passionate about how they are getting involved to promote volunteer fire service,” Andree said.
The fire service also got a new fire safety mobile unit donated by the Cranberry Township Community Chest to promote fire safety and volunteerism, Andree said. It expanded the capacity of the fire prevention program and the recruitment and retention program, along with a CTCC sponsored scholarship program at Butler County Community College.
The department’s Public Safety Training Center has done many training sessions with regional fire departments, EMS agencies and police departments, Andree said.
Regarding the total township budget, the general fund revenue for 2016 would be about $19.4 million, compared to roughly $19.5 million this year.
Andree said, “We have a lot to be proud of in Cranberry Township, and I am very proud of what we do and how deliver value to our residents.”
Andree said the township this year paved 7.38 miles of road maintaining a “B” rating or better on 95 percent of its roads.
“The board has asked us to maintain the ‘B’ rating,” Andree said. “We got a little behind in 2015. We found the additional revenue in 2016 that we will get all of the roads back up to a ‘B’ rating or better.”
The board will consider the final approval of the 2016 budget Dec. 10.
