Teen faces felony drug possession charge
A teenager landed in jail Tuesday night after Butler police found a digital scale and more than just a little suspected marijuana in his backpack.
Jacob T. McCall, 18, of Butler faces felony drug possession and other charges. He is being held in the Butler County Prison on $20,000 bail.
A city officer on patrol about 4:25 p.m. came upon McCall and another male punching a third male in the 300 block of East Jefferson Street, police said. The patrolman stopped and broke up the fight.
On the ground near the sidewalk, the officer noticed a backpack with the distinctive odor of marijuana coming from it, according to court documents.
A search turned up two plastic baggies of the suspected illegal weed, which later was found to weigh 54.4 grams, or nearly 2 ounces.
Additionally, the backpack contained a small scale and empty plastic sandwich bags. McCall, police said, admitted he owned the backpack.
District Judge Sue Haggerty that night arraigned the suspect on a felony charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and simple assault.
At his arraignment, the young defendant acknowledged he was previously arrested for possessing drug paraphernalia.
A preliminary hearing is tentatively set for Monday.
