Woman charged in more thefts of jewelry

A cleaning woman who is already facing trial in one case is accused of two additional cases of stealing jewelry from clients’ homes.

Butler County detectives on Monday charged Jacki S. Barto, 50, of Clearfield Township with a pair of thefts in 2014 from homes in Franklin Township.

Those charges followed Barto’s arrest earlier this summer in connection with last year’s theft of gold and silver jewelry and other items at a home in Penn Township.

Barto worked for a cleaning service catering to elderly residents when she allegedly committed the crimes, authorities said.

Penn Township police initially charged her in August with stealing $4,652 worth of goods from a North Trail homeowner between Sept. 20 and Dec. 30, 2014.

Township Patrolman Jack Ripper said that after he arrested Barto, she admitted that she had taken property from other homes outside the township.

County detectives on Oct. 27 interviewed Barto, who acknowledged stealing a gold wedding band from the jewelry box of a friend whose house on West Old Route 422 in Franklin Township she was responsible for cleaning in 2014.

That victim did verify that two rings were gone, authorities said.

Detectives on Nov. 3 spoke to another victim, who also lives on West Old Route 422 in Franklin Township.

Investigators suspect Barto last year was caring for that woman’s home when she allegedly stole two rings, a pair of earrings, two gold chains and a tennis bracelet.

Barto is charged in the latest cases with two misdemeanor counts each of theft and receiving stolen property.
