Mars opens school bid
ADAMS TWP — The lone bid for the former Middlesex Elementary School building in the Mars School District is $75,000 from Scott and Brenda Henwood.
Their bid was opened by district officials Friday.
The school board will vote Tuesday evening to either accept or reject the bid. The Henwoods have not said what their intentions are for the building.
Brenda Henwood’s brother, Don Marshall, attended the bid opening with his wife.
Brenda Henwood had asked the board at its October meeting to reveal the appraisal of the building, but was told that would not be made public while the bidding was ongoing.
District solicitor Tom King last month said the board did not want to reveal the amount because bidders may offer more for the property than the appraisal amount.
At Friday’s bid opening, Marshall asked for the appraisal amount, but was told by Superintendent Wesley Shipley he must wait until the Tuesday board meeting.
“When (the board) accepts or rejects (the bid), they will give a reason based on that appraisal amount,” Shipley said.
Marshall asked school officials if the building could be donated. He said his family, which owns a scrap yard near the school on Browns Hill Road, donated the land for the school to be built.
Shipley said a donation of the building would likely require a negotiated contract that would include a low-cost monthly lease so that ownership of the building would revert to the district if the building were no longer being used for the agreed-upon use.
Shipley said King, who did not attend on Friday, would know more specifics regarding donating the building.
Regarding the Marshall family’s donation of the land to build the school many years ago, Swaney said all five Mars schools are on land that was donated by families.
The district bought the building in 1979, and opened it as the Middlesex Township Elementary School. It operated as such until 2004, when it was closed.
It was built in 1911 as a high school before the Mars School District was formed.
The school board will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
