Lost hiker found after 2-hour search

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP, Lawrence County — A missing hiker was found safe Thursday night after rescuers spent two hours searching for her.

Lindsay Dickie, 23, of Valencia was hiking near Slippery Rock Gorge in McConnells Mill State Park when she got lost, said Jake Weiland, assistant park manager.

She called 911 at about 7 p.m. but her cell phone died a short time later.

Weiland said 53 people joined the search, mostly from Lawrence County volunteer fire departments. Firefighters from Portersville also assisted.

Weiland said the search was difficult due to the darkness.

“It’s dark in the gorge,” he said. “Really dark.”

Dickie was found at about 9 p.m. a mile from the area that she thought she was in.

“When she called 911 she was asked to stay where she was,” Weiland said, adding she did not have a flashlight.

Weiland said it is important for all hikers to properly prepare before entering the forest.

“You should be well prepared with proper footwear and clothing,” he said. “But you also need to have a trip plan and let people know where you will be going. And you shouldn’t rely just on a cell phone.”
