Wooden shed burns in Jefferson

JEFFERSON TWP — A wooden shed burned down at 151 Nursery Lane Thursday night.

Chris Ballina, chief of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Department, said homeowner Gwen Mentel noticed the shed was on fire about 5 p.m. shortly after she had put away her riding lawn mower after cutting the grass.

He said the likely cause of the fire was that grass clippings and dead leaves stuck in the deck of the mower started on fire because of the heat from the engine.

The shed was fully involved when firefighters arrived and they got the burning under control within 10 minutes.

Some trees were scorched, though the damage was otherwise contained to the contents of the shed, including the mower and some other tools, Ballina said.

No one was injured.

The Herman Volunteer Fire Department also responded.
