Trucker injured in rollover

FORWARD TWP — A Texas man was taken to the hospital after his tanker truck overturned Thursday on Route 528.

The one-vehicle crash happened shortly before 3 p.m. as 24-year-old Waylon C. Baird of Big Sandy, Texas, was driving north on Route 528 near Earls Lane.

The truck overturned as Baird was negotiating a right curve in the road.

Baird was transported to Allegheny General Hospital by Harmony EMS for treatment of head injuries. A police report indicated that he suffered “major injuries.” The hospital this morning reported that Baird was not on the patient list.

The truck was carrying fresh water. Apparently, none of it leaked from the truck.

Steve Bicehouse, Butler County Emergency Services director, said the county’s hazmat specialist responded to the scene because fuel was leaking from the truck. Bicehouse said the leak ultimately caused no problems.

State police are investigating the crash, and the cause is not yet known. Troopers were not available to provide more information this morning. According to the report, Baird will be charged with a lane violation.

The Evans City Volunteer Fire Department and the Connoquenessing Volunteer Fire Company also responded to the crash.

The last emergency crews did not clear the scene until nearly 6 p.m.
