THON ‘canning’ weekend canceledSTATE COLLEGE — The third and final weekend of collecting donations for Penn State’s student-run dance marathon charitable campaign has been canceled out of safety concerns following the death of a student in September.THON organizers sent a letter canceling the “canning” weekend, an effort in which students ask motorists around the region to drop donations in large cans.THON executive director Katie Meiley said more time is needed to come up with a “sustainable and robust solution” to safety concerns for students. The decision came after 19-year-old sophomore Vitalya Sepot of Branford, Conn., died in a one-car crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in September that injured six other students. Another student died in December 2011 while traveling for a canning weekend.
