Most county voters stay home

Turnout is low despite weather

The weather for the first week in November — mild, sunny skies, a little humid and temperatures in the 70s — came as a pleasant surprise.

But voter turnout Tuesday was about what you would expect in Butler County for an off-year municipal election — low.

A few more than one in four eligible voters showed up at the polls.

According to unofficial results, the Butler County Elections Bureau pegged the countywide turnout at 28.9 percent.

Of the county’s 119,692 registered voters, 34,554 cast their ballots.

The less-than-stellar showing came despite a well-contested county commissioners race, three statewide judicial elections and a wide array of competitive municipal and school board races.

However, as it turned out, Tuesday’s turnout exceeded the number posted in the last county commissioners election four years ago.

In 2011, the turnout was 25.1 percent. By comparison, in the 2007 election, the turnout was 30.2 percent.

Only one of the county’s 89 precincts on Tuesday topped the 50 percent mark. That honor went to tiny Cherry Valley.

Of the borough’s 41 registered voters, 23 cast ballots, representing a 56.1 percent turnout.

Prospect had the second-highest turnout at 42.8 percent, followed by Concord Township and Connoquenessing at 42.3 percent and 42.2 percent, respectively. Butler Township 4’s turnout was 40.7 percent.

Conversely, the precincts with the lowest turnout were: Slippery Rock Township at 15.4 percent; Slippery Rock at 15.5 percent; Butler City 3 at 16.5 percent; and Cranberry Township West 3 at 16.6 percent.
