Arrest made in shooting of officerAMBRIDGE — A man accused of shooting a Western Pennsylvania police officer in his bulletproof vest has been arrested.Beaver County District Attorney Anthony Berosh says Earl Louis Hollins turned himself in to Aliquippa police Friday night. Hollins faces charges including attempted murder and aggravated assault.Police had been searching since early Wednesday for whoever shot Harmony Township Officer Alan Loskoch.Authorities say Loskoch was on patrol in the township when he saw a man trying to break into a car. The suspect shot at the officer, hitting Loskoch once in the vest over his chest.Loskoch was briefly hospitalized. Police Chief Robert Sivewright says Loskoch is doing well.

Lawyers in AG’s office buck KaneHARRISBURG — Four top lawyers in the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office are disputing their boss’ statement about which e-mails stored on the office’s servers should be considered private.The attorney general’s office distributed the four-paragraph memo signed by Bruce Beemer, James Donahue, Robert Mulle and Lawrence Cherba on Friday.They were responding to Attorney General Kathleen Kane’s statement a day earlier that any e-mail sent to an e-mail account in the attorney general’s office is not considered private communication.In their memo, they say Kane’s statement was wrong and all communication with clients, co-counsel or opposing lawyers is private. Also private, they say, is communication involving victims, witnesses or criminal justice agencies.

2 domestic violence shelters closingHARRISBURG — Shelters for victims of domestic violence are beginning to close amid Pennsylvania state government’s four-month-old budget stalemate.Peg Dierkers of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence said Friday two shelters are no longer taking new arrivals because state aid is being held up.Dierkers says Huntingdon House in Huntingdon and the Women’s Center in Bloomsburg are working to relocate the victims currently in their shelters. Zabrina Finn of the Women’s Center says the organization will shelter new arrivals at hotels because some key staff positions are vacant.Finn says the Women’s Center has instituted a partial freeze to save money.Horse racing gets another weekHARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration says it’s delaying by a week any decision to suspend horse and harness racing in Pennsylvania.Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said in a Friday statement he’s had productive conversations with representatives of Pennsylvania’s racing industry about solving a long-term deficit in the State Racing Fund.Redding warned a week ago the state would shut down racing because the fund was out of money and the budget stalemate with the Legislature was preventing the state from transferring money to it.Six Pennsylvania tracks offer Thoroughbred or harness racing.

Mercyhurst: Athletes must live on campusERIE — Mercyhurst University will require all of its student-athletes to live on campus beginning in the fall of 2016.President Michael Victor tells The Erie Times-News the university’s decision is intended to improve both campus and community life as well as promote health and safety.University officials say nearly all undergraduate students will be required to live on the school’s campus in the next several years.
