Freeport's Dougherty 6th in PIAA golf

YORK — Audrey Dougherty walked off the golf course at Heritage Hills Golf Resort Tuesday with mixed feelings.

Her high school golf career at Freeport was over after her second-consecutive round of 86 at the PIAA Class AA Girls Golf Championships.

Her two-day score of 172 was good enough for sixth place in the state and it was the fourth time Dougherty had hung a medal around her neck at the event.

She finished third last season as a junior, was 11th as a sophomore and seventh as a freshman.

Still, Dougherty lamented the shots she left out on a difficult course those two days and the unfulfilling end to her senior season.

“I felt like this was my weakest performance at state,” Dougherty said. “I’m a little disappointed, but I’m happy I made it there all four years. That’s an accomplishment.

“It’s bittersweet,” Dougherty added. “It was a shame to end my career that way, but I had a third-place finish and I got medals all the way through. I’m looking at the positives moving forward.”

Dougherty has had an interesting fall season.

She joined the Freeport girls cross country team for the first time this season and is taking advanced high school and intro college courses.

The time crunch has been intense.

“I’ve probably averaged about two hours of sleep every night,” Dougherty said. “I have to leave school early all the time for golf matches and cross country meets and the last three weeks — I missed three days one week, two days last week and I’ll miss three days this week because the WPIAL cross country championships are Thursday. My AP Calculus class is the final period and I’ve been to that class 12 times this whole year.”

Dougherty, though, sees that as great preparation for college.

She intends to play golf at the next level, but hasn’t yet decided where that will be.

“I figured I’d wait to make that decision after the season,” she said.

She said she joined the cross country team this season for a new experience.

“The golf team was a boys golf team,” Dougherty said. “I wanted to be on a girls team and get that experience before I went to college where I’ll be on a girls golf team.”

Dougherty intends to iron out some of the kinks that presented itself during her senior season, especially in the two rounds at the state tournament.

“My game was not on,” Dougherty said. “I was having trouble with my irons and my putting was bad.”

The course was also difficult, especially in the second round Tuesday, Dougherty said.

“I played a lot better today — I had eight or nine pars,” Dougherty said. “But I had too many double (bogeys).”

Dougherty was slowed at mid-season by illness.

She missed nearly three weeks of action and her scores ballooned when she returned.

“It kept me back a little bit,” Dougherty said. “But I got back into form by the end of the season.”

Dougherty also had another major change this year.

A name change.

Known as Audrey Clawson all of her life, she adopted her mother’s maiden name of Dougherty when she turned 18 Sept. 27.

“My mom and dad have been divorced since 2009,” Dougherty said. “I turned 18 and wanted a new start, new name.”

No matter what name she takes, Dougherty has no regrets about her high school career and her ultra-hectic senior season.

“People ask me why I do it all,” Dougherty said. “I don’t regret anything.”
