HARRISBURG — Motorcyclists and others stuck at red lights when sensors haven’t been triggered may soon get the legal ability to continue on their way under a bill approved by the Pennsylvania House.

The House voted 179 to 18 Tuesday for the measure to let drivers proceed carefully through intersections if they’re caught at a light that won’t turn green.

Drivers will have to stop for the red light and make sure the way is clear before they can go, as if it were a stop sign. Lighter vehicles such as motorcycles and buggies will be helped, but it would apply to all types of vehicles.

The bill also would remove state law’s existing sunset provision for red light cameras.

The measure is on its way to the Senate for its consideration.
