CALIFORNIA, Pa. — Mars graduate and Indiana (Pa.) University sophomore golfer Joshua Bartley recently won the California University Invitational.

Bartley shot a 146 in the two-day event and won in a three-hole sudden death playoff.

MINNEAPOLIS — The NFL acknowledges that one of the game officials should have noticed that 18 seconds were incorrectly run off the clock late in the fourth quarter of Pittsburgh's 24-20 victory at San Diego.League spokesman Michael Signora says in a statement emailed Monday that “an error by the clock operator” after a touchback allowed extra time to run off, and “it is the responsibility of the side judge to supervise the timing of the game.”The statement adds: “Had the side judge or any of the other six on-field officials noticed the timing error, they could have corrected it.”The NFL will review the work done by the clock operator and game officials.

SEATTLE — Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano has undergone surgery to repair core muscle injuries and is expected to be OK for spring training.Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto made the announcement Tuesday after Cano's surgery was complete.The surgery was done in Philadelphia to fix injuries on Cano's left and right sides. The recovery time is expected to be six weeks.The 32-year-old Cano was diagnosed with a core muscle injury on his right side in late September. A later MRI showed the injury on the left side.Cano hit .287 with 21 home runs and 79 RBIs in 156 games this year.

AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas says longhorn steer mascot Bevo XIV has been diagnosed with cancer and will retire.The university said Tuesday that the longhorn steer, whose given name is Sunrise Studly, was preliminarily diagnosed last week with bovine leukemia virus. The diagnosis was confirmed by several veterinarians.Bevo XIV began his tenure as the Texas mascot at the age of 2 in 2004. He was a part of back-to-back Rose Bowl victories, including the January 2006 win that resulted in the BCS national championship.
