Warriors record historic shutout

Moniteau blanks Clarion for 1st time since 1970

CHERRY TWP — Following a shellacking at the hands of Karns City, Moniteau quarterback/defensive back Derek Boben knew things had to change.

“We worked with our defensive coordinator on tendencies and formations,” Boben said. “Everyone had one job and they needed to do it.”

All 11 Moniteau defenders swarmed Friday night at home, forcing two fumble recoveries in a 10-0 win over Clarion.

It was the first time the Bobcats had been shut out since 2010 and the first time they were shutout the Warriors since 1970.

“We are starting to focus on the task at hand,” Warriors coach Wade Vogan said. “I've been preaching mental toughness and they showed what they were capable of.”

Boben put the Warriors ahead 7-0 in the second quarter when he scored on a 24-yard run. He led Moniteau with 101 yards rushing on 24 carries.

“I got a great block from Dalton Anderson and Wyatt Ifft had a nice seal block,” Boben said. “A lane opened and I took it to the house.”

Stephen Fawcett gave the Warriors (2-4) insurance in the third quarter by making a 29-yard field goal.

Shonn Kline also added 66 yards rushing on 14 yards for the Warriors.

“We were swarming to the ball, every body did their roles and responsibilities and we got the victory,” Vogan said.

The win helped give Boben renewed hope Moniteau can get back into the chase for a playoff sport.

“It was everything to us,” Boben said. “We knew our season had a good chance of being done after the regular season. If we had any chance to pick it up we had to do our job.”
