Polly Shaw

PITTSBURGH — Polly Shaw of Portersville received a 2015 With Our Youth! Dedication award by NRTA: AARP's Educator Community.

She was recognized for her service to youth. The award was presented at the recent state convention of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.

Through the national Pillowcase Project, Shaw is helping third, fourth and fifth graders in 28 Western Pennsylvania counties learn the science of hazards, emergency preparedness and coping skills.

The training and instruction focuses on three core principles — learn, practice and share.

Shaw is lead trainer for the Western Pennsylvania Red Cross.

———Charlene Jurysta, a parent from the Alliance for Nonprofit Resources with the Choice Program, received the Exceptional Parent/Caregiver Award from Value Behavioral Health at the ninth annual Family Forum.She was one of 27 award nominees from eight counties. Eight awards were presented, one for each county.The award acknowledges families of children less than 22 years of age who are actively engaged in their child's treatment and who encourage and support other families who are involved in the medical or mental health system.Jurysta, who lives in Mount Chestnut, was nominated for overcoming challenges and contributing to the success of her child, demonstrating resiliency throughout his journey and inspiring others.
