New Castle trio accused of burglaries

Charges filed in cases; 2 already arrested

WORTH TWP — A trio from New Castle is facing felony charges after they allegedly burglarized two township homes earlier this summer.

Shawn Book, 38, and Toni Arnold, 40, on Wednesday were arraigned in District Court in Slippery Rock and later placed in Lawrence County Prison on $50,000 bail.

Both are facing felony charges of burglary, criminal trespass, and theft by unlawful taking stemming from two separate burglaries on June 24 and July 3.

Michelle Book, 35, Shawn Book’s wife, also is facing similar charges for her alleged involvement and had a warrant issued for her arrest.

Police said Shawn Book on July 3 allegedly broke into the Roher Road home of Mustafa Tayfor and attempted to steal medication before he was chased away when Tayfor reached for a gun, according to court documents.

Tayfor told police he was preparing to take a shower when he saw a man, later identified to be Shawn Book, enter his bedroom through a second story glass door.

Tayfor said he reached for his gun and Book fled back out the door and jumped off the balcony.

A gold sedan left the driveway but Tayfor found a hat, part of a glove and a screwdriver that was left behind.

Tayfor called police and reported the incident immediately.

A short time later the gold sedan returned and the female driver asked Tayfor for help, saying she had just hit someone with her car.

Tayfor told the woman he recognized her car and got the license plate information as she drove away, according to documents.

Police identified Arnold as the owner of the car.

A week later police questioned Arnold, who said Shawn and Michelle Book committed the burglary and she was only there to pick them up.

The next day police interviewed Michelle Book, who police said admitted to being involved in the burglary, but said Arnold had more involvement than she originally stated.

Michelle Book told police she waited at the end of the driveway in a separate vehicle while her husband and Arnold drove up to the home in the gold sedan. Book said her husband fled the home when the man inside grabbed a gun and that he fell while fleeing.

She added Arnold went back to the home to try to retrieve the hat, glove and screwdriver that Shawn Book had dropped.

Two days later, Arnold confessed to her involvement in that robbery and allegedly told police about another one she and the Books had committed in the township. Arnold reportedly told police they stole several cases of ammunition from an unoccupied home on Studebaker Road on June 24.

She said she received a phone call that morning from Shawn Book, who told her he had been watching the house for a couple days and that they were going to “hit it.”

Arnold said Michelle Book broke a window of that home with her arm and crawled inside to unlock the front door. The Books then stole several cases of ammunition from the home while Arnold stood as a lookout, Arnold told police.

Arnold said the ammunition was sold to people Shawn Book knew and to Allegheny Outfitters, a gun store in Mercer County.

Michelle Book later confirmed to police Arnold’s account of the case.
