Former school secretary to be sentenced Nov. 12
A former secretary at Holy Sepulcher Catholic School on Nov. 12 will learn her punishment for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the school.
Lynn M. Tomlinson, who’s allegedly always acknowledged stealing as much as $315,545 from the Middlesex Township school between 2007 and 2011, in July pleaded guilty to third-degree felony theft and tampering with records.
However, the 46-year-old Penn Township mother entered a “straight plea” meaning there’s been no sentencing arrangement made between prosecutors and the defense.
Butler County Judge William Shaffer alone will make the sentencing decision during the upcoming hearing, and he could pick jail time.
“We will ask for a standard sentence,” said Assistant District Attorney Patricia McLean, who is prosecuting the case.
A standard sentence for third degree felony is 9 to 16 months in prison. However, it would be fully in the judge’s power to weigh the circumstances and sentence Tomlinson to less, more or no prison time.
And Tomlinson’s defense attorney Steve Misko said there are circumstances the defense believes should reduce the sentence. He said he will present those to the judge in hopes of a lesser sentence. However, he said it would be inappropriate to talk about them at this time.
According to court records, Tomlinson was hired as a secretary at the school in 2007.
Some of the stolen money was students’ tuition payments, police said. Other money was intended for the school’s fundraising program.
According to court records, Tomlinson told investigators she “got carried away with the spending and would purchase items such as clothes and jewelry.”
McLean said prosecutors also will seek restitution to the school.
