Seneca to get sportsmanship award from WPIAL

Jackson TWP — The Seneca Valley School District is being honored for good sportsmanship.

It was announced at the school board meeting Monday night that Seneca Valley was selected by the WPIAL Sportsmanship Committee to receive one of the five 2014-15 sportsmanship awards.

“This is the first time in school history that we have been awarded this honor,” said Heather Lewis, Seneca Valley athletic director.

Lewis said the best thing about receiving the award is that another school district nominated Seneca Valley for it.

“There are people out there that look at what we do as an athletics program and believe that we do it the right way,” she said.

Seneca Valley Superintendent Tracy Vitale said this type of an award is far more important than any game result.

“To me as an educator this is more important than any winning game,” Vitale said. “That our children are good sportsmen and sportswomen; that we know how to shake hands; that we know how to look up when we lose and say we are going to get you next time and we are going to work and try harder.”

The four other schools awarded are Peters Township, South Park, South Fayette and West Allegheny high schools.

The schools will be honored at the Pittsburgh Regional History Center on Nov. 12.
