OLD FORGE, Pa. — Teachers in one northeastern Pennsylvania school district are striking again after six years without a contract.

The labor dispute in the Old Forge School District is the longest in Pennsylvania.

The district about five miles southwest of Scranton says it can’t afford salary increases and other expenses demanded by the union, saying that money’s been spent on special education programs and other bills.

Teachers struck for three weeks two years ago without reaching a contract and could be out on the picket lines that long again.

The length of teachers’ strikes is limited in Pennsylvania because state law requires students get 180 days of education by the end of each school year.

Superintendent John Rushefski says the district has a limited tax base and is made up of “older homes and pizza parlors.”
