BRADDOCK — A worker has reportedly died in an unspecified accident at a United States Steel Corp. plant near Pittsburgh.

Company spokesman Sarah Cassella says the worker wasn't a plant employee. He was employed by Whistler Construction in Braddock, the same suburb where the Edgar Thomson Plant is located, about five miles from Pittsburgh.

Cassella said the worker was performing unspecified “planned maintenance” when he was killed.

NEW YORK — Federal prosecutors are set to announce a settlement with General Motors that resolves a criminal investigation into how the Detroit automaker concealed a deadly problem with small-car ignition switches, according to three people briefed on the case.Under the deal, GM will pay a fine of around $900 million in a deferred prosecution agreement on a wire fraud charge. That means any charges would be dismissed if GM complies with oversight and other terms for three years.

Tom Wolf and top Republican senators sparred in the Capitol on Wednesday, as talks aimed at breaking a budget stalemate dragged on and the Democratic governor vowed to veto a short-term spending package that the GOP began advancing.Leaders of the Legislature's Republican majorities bristled at what they called Wolf's rejection of their offer to break the stalemate and his continued insistence on a multibillion-dollar tax increase.Wolf, in response, called the GOP's budget measure a cynical and hypocritical attempt to make people believe Republican lawmakers are trying to help the same schools and social services agencies for which they cut funding in recent years.
