Raiders get thunderstruck by Gremlins
BROOKVILLE — There was thunder and lightning before the game.
There was also thunder and lightning during it.
Karns City running backs Maverick Kelsea (the thunder) and Collin Dunmyre (the lightning) rumbled for 248 yards and three touchdowns as the Gremlins withstood a nearly two hour weather delay to roll 47-0 over Brookville Friday night.
“I just paced around in the locker room,” Dunmyre said of the long delay. “Just joked around for awhile.”
Kelsea had to battle his nerves.
“It made the butterflies so much worse,” he said.
Until that first hit — one he dished out.
“Oh, I was just waiting for that first one,” Kelsea said. “Had to get that first one out of the way.”
Neither of the senior backs showed any ill signs from the delay.
Kelsea rolled up 150 yards and two TDs on just seven carries, including an 83-yard touchdown run in which he broke a slew of arm tackles, and Dunmyre added 98 yards and a score on nine attempts.
“Those guys worked extremely hard in the offseason — they were good players last season,” said Karns City coach Ed Conto. “And they made themselves better. If we give them any kind of a crease, they are going to do something with it. They are steady, solid kids and that's what you expect out of seniors.”
Karns City was steady and solid throughout, building a 28-0 lead at the half on the strength of its running game and perfectly executed screen pass from Jacob King to Chandler Turner that went for a 34-yard touchdown.
Kelsea's long touchdown run early in the second half triggered the mercy rule.
Meanwhile, Karns City's defense dominated throughout, holding Brookville to just 63 total yards and minus-19 on the ground.
“I think we did a good job, but I think Brookville is young and undermanned right now,” Conto said. “I expected our kids to do well. I hope they did well, but until you see the film, sometimes it could be deceiving.”
The quarterback rotation of Cullen Williams and King also seemed to work well.
King was 3-of-4 for 49 yards and a touchdown. Williams completed one pass for 12 yards.
“On the sideline they looked OK,” Conto said. “They probably still aren't where we'd like it. They're both young. Every game they should improve.”
Dunmyre and Kelsea are also hoping to improve.
“It's going to be tough to stop because you can't just key on one thing,” Dunmyre said. “(Kelsea) is going to run through guys and I'm going to run around guys.”
“We have so many different ways to beat you,” Kelsea added. “Hopefully that will give us a good season.”
