Weekend event gets $1K for park
EVANS CITY — The Leo Club raised more than $1,000 for the EDCO Park Authority during an event over the weekend.
John Rogers, authority president, said on Monday that the five young adults from the teen branch of the Lions Club spent considerable time planning and setting up the carnival.
Rogers said while there were games and refreshments, the bulk of the money was raised through a rummage sale. He said the community donated items to be sold.
“I think it’s outstanding,” Rogers said of the Leo Club’s efforts to raise money for the authority. “Once again, the young adults of Evans City have stepped up.”
The Leo Club members decided to organize the carnival and rummage sale when they learned that the park’s pool must undergo a feasibility study before it can apply for grants to pay for the many upgrades needed there.
The authority must pay $10,000 toward the grant, and the borough council has pledged $10,000.
Cindy Caldwell, an authority board member and manager at the EDCO pool, said the authority is within a few thousand dollars of reaching its goal.
“We’re very close,” Caldwell said. “We could get there by the end of August.”
Rogers said a chicken barbecue will be held on Aug. 22 at the park to benefit the feasibility study fund. Caldwell said the community can still donate to the authority at www.gofundme.com, where they can type 16033, Evans City’s ZIP code, into the search box.
