Spangler earns 16th save
BECKLEY, W.Va.— Seneca Valley graduate Zach Spangler continued to do his job for the Butler BlueSox Tuesday night, working a scoreless ninth in the team’s 10-7 Prospect League East Division win over the West Virginia Miners.
Succeeding at his job also put him in the league’s record books.
Spangler earning the save tied him for the all-time Prospect League record of 16, which was set by former Slippery Rock Sliders relief pitcher Chase Byerly.
At the start of the game, it didn’t appear the BlueSox (24-20 overall, 10-6 second half) would need Spangler.
Butler plated eight runs in the first inning, chasing West Virginia pitcher Caleb Smith after one inning. Ty Sullivan and Dan Hrbek led the BlueSox’s offense with three hits apiece. Sullivan and Allan Hooker led the team by each driving in three runs.
Jamie Switalski also drove in a pair of runs for Butler.
West Virginia (26-17, 6-7) made the game close by plating six runs in the eighth inning after falling behind 10-1.
Larry Wood earned the win for Butler, striking out two batters and allowing five hits in six innings of work.
