Bidding a proper farewell

BlueSox outfielder goes 4-for-6 in final game with squad

Ty White made sure his final game at Kelly Automotive Park was one to remember.

After going 4-for-6 and making three superb defensive plays earlier in the game, Butler's right fielder found himself on second base with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning of Friday night's Prospect League baseball game against Quincy.

Teammate Matt Hansen lined an Austin Piscotty pitch down the left-field line and White scored easily to give the BlueSox a dramatic 5-4 victory over the Gems in front of 1,285 fans.

“I was planning on playing the whole season,” said White, a junior at Arkansas State University who resides near Kansas City, Mo. “But I'm diabetic and I have a very important appointment with my doctor. There are certain dates when he is available and I have to get back. I'm traveling with the team to Jamestown this weekend, then leaving for home Sunday night.”

White did not take for granted being involved in so many big plays Friday, including the winning run.

“It's awesome. My teammates and I have been close the whole summer,” he said. “I'll definitely keep up with how the team is doing on Twitter and Facebook.”

White set up the victory with his leadoff single to left in the bottom of the 13th, then moved to second on Danny Hrbek's sacrifice bunt.

“Ty had been struggling at the plate and he picked a good game to break out,” said Butler manager Jason Radwan. “This was a good send-off for him.”

Hansen's decisive hit rewarded pitcher Cody Jackson for his impressive relief appearance.

Jackson entered the game in the top of the 10th inning following Zach Spangler's first blown save of the season in 15 attempts. The former threw four scoreless innings, striking out three and walking none.

“It was a great performance by Cody,” Radwan said. “He threw 30 pitches (Thursday in a 4-2 loss to Quincy) and we weren't planning on using him today, but we are short on pitching. He kept saying he wanted to go back out there tonight.”

With a 4-3 lead, Spangler appeared on his way to a 15th save after retiring the first two batters in the top of the ninth inning, but Taylor Schwaner kept the Gems (4-10) alive with a single, then scored when Justin Wylie doubled just inside the first-base bag.

Quincy scored a first-inning run off of BlueSox starter Jon Anderson.

That's where the game stood until Butler erupted for four runs off of Aaron Gutierrez in the bottom of the third frame.

David Marcus crushed his league-leading eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot that put Butler ahead 2-1.

Allan Hooker drew a bases-loaded walk that brought in another run and White singled in Jared Grove.

The Sox (9-5) then fell into an offensive funk, failing to score a run over the next nine innings and stranding seven baserunners in that span.

Anthony Villa, normally an infielder for the Gems, pitched 8 1/3 of those innings before Piscotty took the mound in the bottom of the 12th.

White's defense kept Quincy at bay in the top of the fourth inning. With runners at first and second and two outs, he made a diving catch on a ball that Piscotty belted toward the right-center field gap.

“When I dove for the ball, I was pretty confident I could get to it,” he said, “but if I didn't, our center fielder was Allan Hooker and I knew he would be there to back me up.”

The Gems did battle back for single tallies in the fifth and sixth off of Anderson.

White also made fine running catches while sprinting toward the right-field line in the 12th and 13th.

“Games like this are tough on both teams,” said Radwan. “The pitching takes a hit because of all the innings, but you'd sure rather win them than lose. Hopefully, we can continue this over the weekend.”
