Theft, fraud charges filed

120 fake credit cards seized

SPRINGFIELD TWP, Mercer County — More than 100 fake credit cards and thousands of dollars worth of ill-gotten merchandise and gift cards were seized at a hotel during an identity theft investigation, authorities said.

A Florida man and woman face hearings this month in connection with the theft and fraud case.

State police recently arrested Gean Carlos Del Valle Barquin, 37, of Doral, and Jeisy Camejo Escandell, 28, of Miami Beach on a list of charges.

Police began their investigation June 27 after a Bedford County man noticed several unauthorized transactions on his account and notified authorities, according to court documents.

One of those fraudulent purchases, police said, was made within several minutes of the call at Primanti Brothers restaurant just off Interstate 79 in Springfield Township.

Troopers contacted the restaurant and employees provided a description of the suspects. A short time later, police arrested Barquin and Escandell less than five miles away at Rachael’s Roadhouse on Route 19.

The couple had bogus credit cards, police said.

Investigators learned the defendants had been staying at the Holiday Inn Express next to Premium Outlets in Springfield Township.

A search of the room turned up a treasure trove of evidence, documents said, including piles of phony credit cards and more than $26,000 worth of merchandise and prepaid gift cards from stores at the outlet mall and elsewhere.

Police said they found nearly 120 fraudulent credit cards containing stolen account information. Those cards, according to investigators, paid for the defendants’ hotel room, rental car and the merchandise in their room.

Barquin and Escandell were both arraigned June 28 on charges of access device fraud, theft by deception, possessing counterfeit credit cards and conspiracy.

Barquin remains in the Mercer County Jail on $25,000 bail. Escandell was released June 30 after posting $25,000 bail.

Preliminary hearings for the defendants are July 27 before District Judge Lorinda Hinch.
