Prokay picks up U.S. Amateur spot

Grove City native ties for 1st place at sectional qualifi er in Meadville

MEADVILLE — Ryan Prokay didn’t have his A-game.

“I’d say I had a B-minus or C-plus game,” said Prokay, a Grove City native and Robert Morris University graduate.

Even without his top game, Prokay found a way to get it done Monday — especially in the second round — of the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifier at the Country Club of Meadville, shooting the day’s best score of 67 in the final 18 holes.

Prokay, a Grove City High graduate, finished the two-round tournament with a 141 to tie Christopher Kupnieweski of Erie for first place to earn a spot in the U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be held at Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club Aug. 17-23.

There will be 312 golfers at that tournament.

“This means everything,” Prokay said. “It’s the biggest amateur tournament in the world.”

After the first round, even Prokay didn’t expect to punch his ticket to the U.S. Amateur Championship.

Prokay struggled at times, shooting a 2-over-par 74 and found himself looking up at a slew of names on the leaderboard.

Valencia native and Mars graduate Josh Bartley and Sean Knapp were tied for the lead with a 4-under 68 after the first round.

Prokay went out and played his second round with the attitude that he had nothing to lose.

“I came out in the second 18 with a par, birdie, birdie, birdie,” Prokay said.

That — and good work on and around the green — got him going.

“I made 8- and 10-footers. I even made a 40-footer,” Prokay said. “It was almost like it was meant to be.”

When Prokay finished his second round with a 67 and heard the higher scores the other golfers had put up in the afternoon, he felt like he had a chance.

Then Knapp imploded on the final hole of his second round with a three-putt, putting Prokay and Kupniewski into the championships.

“I won this tournament with a B-minus or C-plus game,” Prokay said. “But I had an A-game with my putter.”

Prokay said he struggled off the tee, something that hadn’t been a problem for him this year.

“Sometimes I go into a three-day funk,” Prokay said. “Then it corrects itself.”

Prokay hopes that is the case next month in Illinois.

The tournament there may be even bigger for Prokay, 23, who is planning on turning pro this fall.

He is looking for sponsorship money to make that happen. A win at the U.S. Amateur Championship would go a long way in making that a reality.

“No pressure, right?” Prokay said, chuckling. “I just have to go out and win the biggest amateur tournament in the world.”

Knapp finished third and is a first alternate for the U.S. Amateur Championship. Bartley finished fourth and is the second alternate.
