Street paving projects slated

Borough saves $15K after review

EVANS CITY — Thanks to a good catch by public works director Norm Nelson, the borough will save $15,000 on street paving.

Nelson said Monday that the borough’s part of the joint bids for paving with Forward Township was more than $72,500. But at Monday night’s borough council meeting, Nelson announced that another review of the paving program showed that a portion of Margaret Avenue the borough had planned to pave is in Forward Township.

With the township paying for that part of Margaret Avenue, the cost to the borough was lowered to almost $64,700.

Nelson said Weist Asphalt and Paving of Butler got the bid for the job. The bids were opened last month.

According to Nelson, Bell Street will be milled and paved, Margaret Avenue from Jefferson Street to the borough line will be paved, and binder sealant will be applied to Maple Avenue.

Because of the savings, tar and chip also will be applied to the alleys that are west of the railroad tracks.

Nelson said work could begin by the end of the month and will be done by the end of summer.

At the council’s June meeting, council President Lee Dyer said East Coast Paving two years ago used a lesser grade asphalt on Bell Street than it had agreed to use. Dyer said a lack of communication from the company when borough officials asked it to remit the difference could result in legal action against the New Castle company.

But on Tuesday morning, Dyer said a check for the $400 to $500 difference in cost between the two grades of asphalt has been received by the borough.

Nelson also announced Monday night that the residential recycle bins will be delivered on Aug. 3 to borough customers by Vogel Disposal of Mars.

He said Vogel will waive the charge to deliver the bins, which will save the borough more than $2,000. The bins were bought through a grant.

Nelson said customers will be notified about what items can be placed in the bins for recycling and where to properly place the bins for pick up.

The bins will say “Property of Evans City Borough” and will include a graphic of an oil well in keeping with the borough’s history as an oil boom town.
