Susan R. Ludwik

Susan R. Ludwik, 70, of Mars left our world in peace Tuesday, surrounded by her loved ones.

Susan fought valiantly against Pulmonary Fibrosis. Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God and the love and prayers of family, friends and many supporters carried her through the past five months since her official diagnosis.

Susan was born on Jan. 22, 1945, to John V. Watson and Ruth E. Watson. She was the third child and had eight siblings.

After graduating from Evans City High School, Class of 1964, she met her sweetheart and future husband, Joseph E. Ludwik. The couple was married Sept. 17, 1966, and shared 49 beautiful, loving and fun-filled years together. They made their home in Mars, where they raised their three daughters and opened their home and hearts to so many.

Surviving Susan is her husband, Joseph E. Ludwik; her children, Amy (Shawn) Anthony of Renfrew, Beth (James) Brethauer of Cranberry Township and Jodi (Brian) Ludwik-Miller of Emsworth; she was known as Gigi to the grandchildren who she loved dearly, Casey (James) Leonhard, Kelly Anthony, Troy Anthony, Nathan Anthony, Kaitlin Humes, Alexander Humes, Zachary Humes, Lindsey Helfer, Garrett Brethauer, Mitchell Brethauer, Carson Brethauer, Zoey Miller and Lila Miller; her mother, Ruth E. Watson-Corfield of Evans City; eight siblings and their loving spouses, Charles Watson, Carol (Lloyd) Green, Mary Jane (Heinie) Raupp, Joy (Richard) Nalevanko, Debbie (James) Merrison, John (Terri) Watson, James (Teddie) Watson and Andrew (Tami) Watson; also surviving are Sally and Rob Boring, Norman and Oyo Ludwik and Susan and Michael Menzel, whom Susan loved as her own siblings; and many, many loved and adored nieces and nephews.

Throughout her life, Susan maintained a sweet and simple demeanor which won the trust and hearts of many. Possessing a true servant's heart, Susan was an active member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Evans City. She provided a multitude of services throughout her life, including being a Sunday school and Bible school teacher, a participant in the choir, director of the Cherub Choir for children, co-chaired, along with her husband on the Hospitality Committee and was co-founder of Manna Night Youth Group. She and her husband also provided services as sextons for the St. Peter's Lutheran Church for more than 10 years. She also was the creator of the motto for St. Peter's church: “God's Son Never Fails.”

Susan was a lifetime member and officer of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she held the chair of Ruth for several years.

She enjoyed baking, cake decorating, sewing, crafting and gardening. She took great pride in her flowers and plants. Susan also enjoyed ceramics, collecting antiques and visiting with friends. With a zest for life, Susan loved to travel, camp and fish, which provided many fun adventures and sleep over events for her children and grandchildren. Her love for her children was tireless. She was a nanny and caretaker for several families.

Susan will live on in the hearts and minds of all of us, but especially in the spirit of her beloved grandchildren as she always had the enthusiasm to play, to get dirty, to plant a flower, to craft, to splash, to explore and love life to its full potential.
