Knighting the best of spring
It’s been a few weeks since the Knoch baseball team finished up its scorching path to the PIAA Class AAA baseball championship.
Time allows for perspective. And a few weeks later the Knights’ run is still just as amazing.
Obviously, Knoch was the story of the spring.
But there were plenty others that were told.
In reflection, here are my memories of the spring sports season:
Baseball Player of the Year
There are many, many worthy candidates.
Moniteau pitcher Derek Boben certainly had some eye-catching numbers.
The right-hander was 7-0 with a 0.36 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 39 innings pitched. As a hitter, he also batter .404.
Slippery Rock’s Ryan Lauster was one of the hardest players to get out this season.
The left-handed swinger batted .444 with a pair of home runs, 23 RBI and struck out just four times in 86 at-bats.
But my pick from player of the year is Colex Shinbert.
Who?
It’s not a who, but a duo of whos.
Cole Shinsky and Alex Stobert to be exact.
The pitching duo for Knoch were, well, unbeatable, combining to go 16-0 and helping the Knights to that state championship thing.
Shinsky got the Ks. Stobert got the ground balls. Shinky is a hard-throwing left-hander. Stobert is a Greg Maddux-esque pitching Picaso.
The two were perfect foils for each other, like Batman and Robin, Starsky and Hutch, Kershaw and Greinke.
Softball Player of the Year
Again, many worthy candidates.
Pitcher Cheyenne Hindman burst onto the scene as a freshman and helped the Slippery Rock High softball team end a run of futility with a playoff berth.
Maggie Olshenske batted .500 with three homers and 20 RBI for Mars. Kristina DeMatteis bludgeoned opponents at the plate for Moniteau, hitting nearly .600 again.
But my choice is another Warrior star, Kennedy DeMatteis, who was 18-2 in the circle with a 1.78 ERA and 177 strikeouts in 118 innings pitched.
At the plate, she was a menace as well, batting .568 with 39 RBI and 14 doubles.
Bow tie of the year
To the entire Seneca Valley boys volleyball team.
Behind the signature bow tie style of coach Dan Follett, the Raiders rde the bow tie to the PIAA semifinals.
Not really human of the year
Are we sure Jordan Geist isn’t an alien from Krypton.
The yellow sun of our planet sure does make Geist throw a shot put and discus really, really far. In addition to a championship at the prestigious Penn Relays, Geist also grabbed gold at the PIAA Track and Field Championships in the shot put and discus.
He will never kneel before Zod.
