Maximizing production

2 big innings spark East Butler to win

EAST BUTLER — The bats came alive for East Butler.

Meridian's bats, however, were mostly silent.

East Butler pounded out 10 hits and used two big innings to topple Meridian, 7-2, in legion action at Speed-O-Field Tuesday night.

“That was huge with 10 hits,” said East Butler manager Steve Armahizer. “It was good to see that. We didn't leave many guys on and that was huge.”

Meanwhile, Tanner Master, who was filling in as manager for his father, Butch Master who could not attend the game, lamented his team's lack of offensive production, particularly in the clutch.

Meridian (8-6), had just three hits and left five runners stranded in scoring position.

“When you don't hit the ball in clutch situations, that's what's going to happen,” Tanner Master said. “We left too many guys on base.”

East Butler (8-3) took advantage of its opportunities.

After Meridian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against East Butler starting pitcher Alex Seybert, East Butler scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the frame off Meridian starter Nick Malis.

Garret Goslaw had a RBI single in the frame for East Butler, which drew three walks in the inning.

Goslaw was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Both Seybert and Malis settled down after their rocky first innings.

“Nick started out a little shaky, but he did a great job battling back and giving us four solid innings,” Master said. “He showed his heart and strength and willingness to compete.”

East Butler scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the key blow a RBI double by Chad White, to put the game out of reach.

Seybert has been a workhorse for East Butler and he cruised until loading the bases with no one out in the top of the sixth inning.

“He's thrown a lot for us lately,” Armahizer said. “He threw a heck of a five innings.”

Jeremy Moorhead relieved Seybert and got out of the inning with just one run scored.

“Seybert is real deceiving as a pitcher,” Armahizer said. “And Jeremy is sneaky, too. He threw well for us tonight. Those two have done a lot for us coming in and backing each other up. I know they don't like giving up runs and like helping each other out of sticky situations.”
