BlueSox drop 5th straight game

First-year manager Jason Radwan plans to use the Butler BlueSox’s impending nine-game road trip to find the right combination before closing out the first half of the Prospect League baseball schedule.

After being swept by the Jamestown Jammers at Kelly Automotive Park over the weekend, winning the East Division’s first half is unlikely.

The BlueSox’s 4-1 loss Sunday was their fifth straight, putting Butler 6.5 games behind first-place Jamestown (15-7) with nine games remaining.

Butler also lost 6-1 to the Jammers Saturday.

Radwan hopes the road trip will give the 8-13 BlueSox a blueprint for second-half success.

“We’re going to take this road trip and see who our starting nine position guys are,” Radwan said. “Right now, I honestly don’t have a starting lineup I would go to if I needed a win tomorrow. We have glimpses of players showing us something and the next day they aren’t showing us anything.”

BlueSox pitcher Jon Anderson wanted to get the momentum rolling before Butler heads to Richmond, Ind., Tuesday to play the RiverRats.

Anderson, who had thrown 13 consecutive scoreless inning before Sunday’s game, allowed four runs on four hits in 6.1 innings.

“We needed to get tonight to start rolling into this long road trip, but it didn’t happen,” said Anderson, who is 2-1 with a 1.84 ERA. “We have to turn it on and are going to be playing at fields we’ve never played at. Guys need to show up, play well and we’ll be all right.”

An errant throw by Butler second baseman Tyler Sullivan helped Jamestown stop Anderson’s scoreless streak at 14.2 innings.

Paxton Le Garza led off the top of the second with a single.

Two batters later, Nick Vehlewald hit a grounder that Sullivan bobbled, allowing Vehlewald to beat a late throw to first base.

Seth Wall followed with a single to left field, scoring De La Garza.

Butler catcher Chucky Vasquez couldn’t handle the throw home, and the ball rolled into the BlueSox dugout, allowing Vehlewald to score and put the Jammers up 2-0.

“The defense didn’t help (Anderson) much, the hitting didn’t help him much,” Radwan said. “We struggled all week hitting. Routine plays we didn’t make, I think we had three errors. He pitched good and kept us in the game.”

Neither team had much luck defensively, as they combined for five errors. Heavy rain followed by a power outage forced a 90-minute delay.

The BlueSox scored their only run on an error in the fourth.

Jamie Switalski connected on a two-out single off Pat Mace, who earned the win by throwing 7 innings and fanning four.

Switalski moved to second on a wild pitch before scoring when Nick Rabat reached on a throwing error.

Jamestown extended the lead to 3-1 on a Jalen Washington RBI groundout in the fifth.

The Jammers finished with five hits and struck out five times.

“It’s not like we hit the ball well tonight, we came up with hits when we needed to,” Jamestown manager Anthony Barone said.

The BlueSox missed several opportunities to score. Allan Hooker set Butler up with a one-out triple to center field in the fifth. Sullivan then drew a walk.

Alex Miklos worked the count to 2-2 before driving a rocket down the first-base line that went foul. After a meeting with Barone, Mace forced Miklos to hit into a 6-3 double play to end the threat.

“I told him to settle down and told him he was one pitch away from getting out of the inning,” Barone said. “He’s a ground-ball pitcher and it’s not a big deal when guys get on base.”

Jamestown added an insurance run in the seventh when David Goggin singled in Dominique Jackson.

Jackson reached base by stretching a liner to left field into a double, beating a throw by knocking the ball out of Sullivan’s glove with a hard slide into second.

An ensuing pick-off throw by Vasquez hit Jackson a few pitches later, allowing him to move to third.

Anderson wants to see the BlueSox remedy those errors before the second half starts.

“We need to start winning games going into the second half,” Anderson said. “Start getting hot, once we get hot we have a good team and we’ll be alright.”

Note: BlueSox catcher Russell Clark became the first player in team history to play in 100 games. He entered as a pitch hitter in the ninth inning and struck out.
