LANCASTER — Authorities say swarming mayflies prompted the closure of a central Pennsylvania bridge over the Susquehanna River overnight.

Police in West Hempfield Township in Lancaster County said the Route 462 bridge between Columbia and Wrightsville was shut down at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

LNP newspapers reports that the mayflies swarmed around the lights on the bridge and then fell to the ground, making piles several inches deep on the road.

Fire police blocking traffic on the Wrightsville side of the bridge said four motorcycle crashes occurred because of the flies.

Officer Brad Rohrbaugh said the bridge was reopened sometime before 6 a.m. Sunday.

HARRISBURG — The “reform caucus” in the Pennsylvania Legislature plans to discuss its proposal to limit gifts and other freebies in an institution that does not limit them.The group plans a news conference today to outline legislation that would bar public officials and employees from accepting transportation, lodging, hospitality or anything of economic value.They'll also describe how they evaluate reform proposals and decide whether to support them.Ethics reports filed more than a month ago show state lawmakers and other high-ranking state officials took more than $160,000 in freebies last year. About half that total involved donations for constituent events.Pennsylvania requires public officials to report gifts worth more than $250, and when meals, hospitality or travel from a single source amounts to at least $650 in a year.

PITTSBURGH — Authorities say 11 people sustained minor injuries when a car ran a red light and struck a municipal bus in downtown Pittsburgh.The Port Authority of Allegheny County said the car pushed the bus into a utility pole around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.The agency says 2 passengers on the Route 51 bus, the driver and two people in the car were hospitalized.
