Plaza to host events
Butler Downtown is planning for new community events this summer at the West New Castle Street Plaza.
The group will host the city Farmer’s Market at the plaza for the first time 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The market is typically held 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays on Shore Street.
Bob Dandoy, an organizer with Butler Downtown, said the market will be at the plaza on the third Wednesday of June, July and August in addition to the regular Saturday dates.
“The purpose with any event is to bring people downtown,” Dandoy said. “But a second purpose is to draw attention to the Farmer’s Market on (Shore Street).”
The market includes produce, baked goods and crafts.
The cost to sell goods at the market is $5 for registered Farmer’s Market vendors and $10 for anyone else.
Butler Downtown also started a weekly children’s craft event at the plaza. The hourlong activity is at 1 p.m. Thursdays.
“We’re trying to make the plaza more family friendly,” Dandoy said. “Last year we mainly focused on the Friday concerts.”
The group will host three concerts this summer instead of the weekly shows as in previous years.
The first of those concerts will be June 26.
“We’ll have concerts the last Friday of every month,” Dandoy said. “The idea is to get as many people downtown to go to our businesses and to have dinner that last weekend.”
The group received permission from city council to have beer served in the plaza during the concerts.
Proposed city brew pubs Reclamation Brewing and Butler Brew Works are expected to serve during the July and August concerts. Those concerts will be July 31 and August 28.
While Butler Downtown is a primary user of the plaza, Dandoy said anyone can rent the plaza from the city.
“They just need to go to the city building,” Dandoy said. “It’s the same process as renting a shelter at Memorial Park.”
Dandoy hopes other groups and businesses will hold events at the plaza this summer.
