Festival will feature costume contest

MARS — June 19 may be like a scene from an H.G. Wells book for the Mars Martian New Year festival.

A space and sci-fi costume contest is planned and is open to children and adults.

Free registration will take place at 6 p.m. by the clock on Grand Avenue. The contest will take place there at 7 p.m.

Two categories will be featured, one for children ages 12 and younger and another for those ages 13 to 99.

Both categories have a first place prize of $75. Second place gets $50, third receives $25 and both fourth and fifth place prizes receive $10.

Judges will be Mike Harvey, Mayor Gregg Hartung, Jeff Ward, John Koenig and Bill Swaney.

“It should be fun and interesting,” said Hartung. “It should be a resemblance of New Orleans during Mardi Gras.”

The contest is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Mars.
