JACKSON TWP — Three students at the Seneca Valley Middle School have forever left their mark on the school.

That’s because the school’s art teachers on Thursday unveiled the three pieces of art created by those students that will hang permanently in the school’s hallways.

George Williams, one of the art teachers, said he’s added 63 pieces of student artwork in the past decade to the school’s collection.

Williams said his students are extremely talented and it’s hard to pick only three pieces. But with one wall completely covered and with the teachers starting to place art on a second wall, space is limited.

“It’s a big honor, that’s for sure,” Williams said. “There are more than 1,100 students in the school so it’s a pretty exclusive club.”

The three students honored this year are Skyler Clark, whose still-life painting is entitled “Morning Glory,” Liam Hillebrand, who did a painting of a bluebird, and Riley Surratt, who did a monochromatic painting titled “Tiger Lily.”

Clark and Hillebrand couldn’t attend the unveiling ceremony, but Surratt did and was all smiles after her work was shown.

She stared with wide eyes at her framed piece, which included a plaque with her name, her grade and the name of the painting.

It’s a great honor, Surratt said, especially because she’s usually shy about showing off her work.

“It’s a little overwhelming because I don’t share my art with most people,” she said.

The art teachers started framing and hanging student artwork permanently in 2005.
