PyroFest to be even bigger in more spacious location

PyroFest is moving to Cooper's Lake Campground this year. The two-day fireworks extravaganza will be Friday and Saturday night.

WORTH TWP — Pyrotecnico has set its sights high for this year’s PyroFest now that is in a new location.

“We’ve tripled the space, and we’re hoping to double the amount of people,” said Darcy Kucenic, event coordinator with Pyroctecnico.

PyroFest, billed as the country’s biggest fireworks festival, will be at Cooper’s Lake Campground on Friday and Saturday. This is the first year it will take place over two days instead of one.

It is hosted by Pyrotecnico, a fireworks company in New Castle.

PyroFest was at Hartwood Acres in Allegheny County for its first three years, but last year it sold out of tickets with about 10,000 people in attendance, Kucenic said.

When the company was considering alternative locations, Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau helped sway it to Cooper’s Lake, said Jack Cohen, bureau president.

“We reached out and took them on a tour, showed the facility and they fell in love,” he said.

In addition to attending PyroFest, visitors also have the option of camping, which is offered at Cooper’s Lake separately from the fireworks festival.

The festival is expected to bring in people from outside the region, which means they can camp and do other activities in Butler County during Memorial Day weekend, Cohen said.

“I think they’re all going to come out and have some fun. It’s perfect weather. Camping and fireworks, you can’t mix better than those two,” he said.

Moving to a larger space and expanding to two days will allow the event to have “more of everything,” especially fireworks, Kucenic said.

“There will be fantastic, unique and creative fireworks displays, unlike you’ve ever seen,” she said.

Gates will open at 4 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday. Both days will feature a lineup of fireworks demonstrations, live music and other events.

The fireworks occur at dark.

Live performers will include B.E. Taylor, NOMaD, Johnny Angel & the Halos, Ruff Creek and Ryan Fennell.

In addition to professional displays, the winner and runner-up in “Fantasy in the Sky,” an amateur firework choreography contest, will have their displays featured.

Another display will include a salute to members of the military.

An expanded children’s area will include a Ferris wheel and more activities than in past years.
