Film crew will return for additional episodes
HARMONY — The Pittsburgh-based production company that used the borough as a backdrop for a television pilot is scheduled to return next month to film six additional episodes.
The filmmakers then hope to get the show on television or online.
“We’re very excited at the chance to come back. We had a lot of fun the first time around and everyone was great and supportive,” said Simon Barracchini of Dangerwood Pictures.
Barracchini said filming will resume June 26 and June 28 after getting permission from the borough. The episodes will be a continuation of the historical show “Mason,” which followed the fictionalized character Samuel Westfall after he foiled an assassination attempt on George Washington during the early years of the country.
Dangerwood Pictures shot the pilot in the summer of 2014, and it debuted at the Strand Theater in November.
Barracchini said he and his writing partner, Zack Eritz, wrote additional episodes in hopes of getting the series into film festivals that have a “Web episodes” category. From there he would like to get the series out to a larger audience.
Possible landing spots for “Mason” include cable TV or online streaming services like Netflix or Amazon Prime. Doing so would mean getting TV executives to watch the show first, Barracchini said.
Dangerwood Pictures used the crowdfunding website indiegogo.com to raise about $2,500 to buy props, costumes and equipment to begin production on the new episodes. The group had hoped to raise $15,000.
“We did come up a little short,” Barracchini said. “But thankfully we were able to get some money from very generous people. Some of our friends and families helped out, too.”
In the meantime, the production company is finalizing its plans to return to Harmony where portions of the six new 30-minute episodes will be filmed. Exact shooting locations haven’t been determined, but borough council this week approved the filming for the two days.
“We’re very excited to have them back,” council President Greg Such said. “It showcases the place very nicely and lets people see what we have to offer.”
Set in 1793, the borough will be used as a backdrop for New York City, Barracchini said. The plot will focus on Westfall four years after his appearance in the pilot and specifically will delve into the “secret world of the Masons” and a feud between Washington and a new character.
Barracchini said he couldn’t go into too much detail, but noted history buffs should be entertained with the blending of fact and fiction.
The crew also plans to film in Freedom, Beaver County, and the Bradford House in Washington, Washington County.
Ten actors will be used in the filming, while several extras will be sought as was the case last summer. While in the borough, Barracchini said extras will be allowed to appear in the series as long as they have the appropriate costumes to fit the time period.
Anyone interested in appearing in the series is asked to contact Dangerwood Pictures at dangerwoodmason@gmail.com.
The company chose Harmony due to its historical roots and ability to make the area appear like it did in the 18th century.
“The whole area just has a feel of history to it,” Barracchini said.
Borough officials said anyone interested in being a liaison between the filmmakers and the borough is asked to contact the borough office at 724-452-6780.
