SV graduate picked to study in Germany
CRANBERRY TWP — Rachael Agnello of Cranberry Township will study in Germany for a year after receiving a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals fellowship.
Agnello, 20, is studying at George Mason University and is one of 75 people in the country selected for the program, which is run by the State Department. She was picked from 700 applicants.
The 2012 Seneca Valley High School graduate will study German culture and governance, although she will focus more on the country’s agricultural procedures and economy.
“I’m really interested in exploring the idea of food production,” she said. “Germany has made their agricultural sector very sustainable and very economically efficient. I’m thinking maybe the United States could learn from them a little bit.”
Agnello will spend a year overseas starting in late July.
She will first go to a school in Cologne, where she will study the German language for two months,
After that, she will study for four months at a university, although she hasn’t yet been told which one. Then she will participate in a five-month internship with a company or governmental agency.
Agnello also will have several weeks to travel.
“The goal (of the fellowship) is to create a faction of people in both the U.S. and Germany who really understand the opposite culture,” she said, noting that German students will be coming to America.
