SR might go wireless

Elementary schools may see change

SLIPPERY ROCK — As it develops its budget, the school board is considering a proposal to install wireless networks in both of its elementary schools.

Brett Harper, PC coordinator, presented on both the technology department’s planned improvements for the summer as well as the proposed wireless project at the board’s meeting Monday night.

Implementation of wireless networks for both Slippery Rock Elementary and Moraine Elementary schools would cost $46,731 for the hardware, licensing and installation.

Harper said he would also recommend purchasing 120 laptops — 60 for each building — to be used with the new network, which would cost an additional $10,000 to $20,000.

Both the middle and high school already have carts of Google Chromebooks that have been well utilized, Harper said.

They are moved from classroom to classroom in carts and expand the possibilities for digital learning in each classroom, Harper said.

“My ultimate goal is to have a device in every kid’s hand throughout the day,” he said.

The technology department also plans to replace 90 eight-year-old computers in three labs. One lab in each elementary school and the C-21 lab in the high school will get new computers.

It also will upgrade its servers and install 20 new projectors and interactive boards during the summer. The three projects will total $134,254.

Superintendent Alfonso Angelucci said the district is still exploring options with its budget and does not know whether the wireless implementation will be included.

The board plans to approve its preliminary budget at its May 18 meeting before taking the final vote sometime in June, he said.
