Beautification Day set at park
EVANS CITY — Residents and business owners are invited to help beautify the borough’s park Saturday.
The EDCO Park Beautification Day will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the park on Route 68.
John Rogers, president of the all-volunteer EDCO Park Authority, said the annual event has drawn as few as five volunteers and as many as 40.
“We’re looking for help both inside and outside,” Rogers said. “The idea is to make the park look nice before the season starts.”
Weeding the flower beds, picking up branches, cleaning up the horseshoe pits, removing vining plants and debris from the fence beside the creek, and picking up trash in the parking lot are the main outside tasks, Rogers said.
He said the concession stand building, which includes showers and bathrooms for swimmers, also will be cleaned and prepared for the summer.
Rogers said donations of perennial and annual flowers will be accepted and planted on Saturday.
“I’m always looking for more flowers for our flower beds,” Rogers said. “We don’t have the budget to go and buy the plants.”
But Rogers said perennial flowers are preferred because they do not require planting each spring.
He said while the town’s Leo Club has signed up to help Saturday, no other businesses or civic groups have done so.
Those planning to volunteer are asked to take gloves, shovels and other tools and accessories used in a flower garden if possible, Rogers said.
Volunteers will be provided a lunch, and soft drinks will be available during the day.
Rogers said those who want to volunteer or learn more about Beautification Day or other EDCO activities, can log onto the authority’s website, www.edcopark.com, or search EDCO Park on Facebook.
“I’m excited about the forthcoming year,” Rogers said. “I think people are sick of cold weather and are looking forward to a nice, warm summer and enjoying it with us.”
He said the pool opens on May 22, the Friday before Memorial Day, weather permitting.
“Let’s hope for a hot summer,” Rogers said. “That’s the big thing.”
