Ultramarathon offers relay race

MUDDY CREEK TWP — There is still time to register for the fifth annual Glacier Ridge Trail Ultramarathon at Moraine State Park.

The race will be May 9 and will feature a 30-kilometer race, 50-kilometer race and 50-mile race.

New this year will be a 50-mile relay race with five-person teams. Jake Weiland, assistant park manager, said this was done in honor of it being the fifth year of the race.

He said that this addition will help bring more runners in, ones who might be intimidated by running 50 miles or even 30 kilometers, and to make the mainly individual sport of running have more of a team aspect.

Additionally, Weiland said the relay creates opportunities for businesses that have corporate wellness initiatives.

“Businesses could build a team,” Weiland said.

The race this year also is being held roughly a month later than years past.

“To allow people to have four additional weeks of training,” Weiland said.

He also said the extra time allows the weather to improve, and for trail conditions to improve.

“April can be rather shoddy, with rain and cold temperatures,” Weiland said.

He advised that people who sign up for the race be properly trained for running such long distances. If it is the first long-distance event for a runner, he said they should do the 30-kilometer race.

The goal of this year’s race is to raise a total of $50,000 for the entire five years. So far, the races have raised $43,000.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Moraine McConnells Mill Jennings Commission and the Moraine Preservation Fund. Both are nonprofit groups that support the park.

Some work that is being funded with the money includes the construction of two Adirondack shelters along the North Country Trail near Link Road and the removal and relocation of 2.7 miles of trail from the road.

One planned project is a bridge spanning Muddy Creek carrying the North Country Trail near McDanel’s Launch. Weiland said the project is in the design phase, and will cost $25,000.

The cost to register for the 30-kilomenter race is $85. The cost for the 50-kilometer race is $95.

The cost for the 50-mile race is $105, The cost for a team to register for the 50-mile relay is $275.

Race organizers prefer that runners register for the race by May 1, to get an official head count, but directors will accept registrations the morning of the race.
