Elementary pupils create 3-D mural

Fifth Grader Paige Wilczynski works on a mural made mainly out of recycled materials Monday at Center Avenue Eelementary School.

Students at Center Avenue School have built a unique mural leading up to Earth Day today along with other Earth-friendly activities.

Unlike murals of painted colors and bright expressions, this mural is made mainly from recycled materials such as paper and plastic bags, plastic bottles and soft drink cans.

This mural has 3-D scenery, featuring a tree-lined forest, clouds and a meadow. Some pieces jut from the wall, which has a construction paper backdrop, while others dangle from the ceiling.

The students who worked on the project are in the fourth, fourth and sixth grades. They started April 13 and planned to finish the project by today.

Sara Isacco, fifth grade teacher, said the students usually found time from 1 to 1:30 p.m. to work on the mural.

She said it was a nice break from the state test that took place over the past week and a half, relieving some stress from the standardized testing.

And the students seem to be dedicated to the project rather than using it as an excuse to get out of learning. Isacco said students have chosen to work on the mural rather than go outside for recess.

“They're pretty excited about it,” she said. While Isacco said there will not be an official showing of the mural to parents or the public, it still should be up for the school's Grandparent's Day May 7.The students also prepared for Earth Day in other ways, such as cleaning up the garden around the school and replacing a maple tree, which the Lowes store in Butler Township donated.Isacco said the outdoor projects are something that the students can pass on to the next people who use the school building since the school may close after this school year.“Pending board approval, if we do end up closing, having the new tree and gardens cleaned up and having new things added to the garden will be a nice thing to pass on to whoever uses this building next year,” she said.
