Butler firm will help sheriff's office become more efficient

Butler county Sheriff Mike Slupe

Butler County Sheriff Mike Slupe is using a Butler firm to determine if his office can become more efficient.

Slupe said ARS Systems LLC, a newly formed company that does law enforcement data analytics and training, will analyze how his office operates, including whether he has adequate staffing.

He said in an interview that the firm approached him to propose an agreement.

“Anything that can help makes us better,” Slupe said.

How much the company does depends on funding being available from the U.S. Department of Justice. The firm will seek a federal grant to pay for the study.

If grant funding is unavailable, ARS will do research for three months at no cost to the county.

If funding is approved, the project would take 18 months.

The county commissioners on Monday approved the agreement, which includes ARS providing Slupe’s office with ongoing technical assistance, training and resources.

The assistance would include program evaluations and training that could include seminars on use of force.

ARS also would offer recommendations for the sheriff’s office’s interactions with other agencies, residents, groups, nonprofit organizations and businesses.

According to the agreement, “The goals are to provide objective independent knowledge and validated tools to reduce violence on both a state and local level, and promote healing and justice for victims of all types of crimes.”
