Fire crews prevent spread of grass fire

Flames cover 7 acres in Adams

ADAMS TWP — A blaze covered at least seven acres of grass and woods off Plains Church Road Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters prevented the flames from reaching any nearby homes and a garage.

“It came close to a house,” said Chief Curt Huffman of the Callery Volunteer Fire Company.

Breezy conditions caused the fire to spread.

“It was a recreational fire, and the wind picked up and carried it into the woods,” Huffman said.

He said crews had to adapt while trying put the fire out.

“The wind kept changing direction on us,” Huffman said.

There was no damage aside from burned trees and grass. No one was injured.

Between 50 and 60 firefighters responded to the 12:18 p.m. 911 call.

The Evans City, Middlesex Township, Cranberry Township, Adams Area, Harmony, Zelienople and Marshall Township, Allegheny County, volunteer fire departments assisted Callery.

Crews left the scene at 3:12 p.m.

County fire departments responded to another two grass fires Sunday and two on Saturday.
