HARMONY — Borough council voted Tuesday night to allow the Harmony Inn to erect a tent for an outdoor seating area.

Several proposals concerning work at the restaurant on Mercer Street were reviewed before by the borough’s architectural review board.

Bob McCafferty, the owner of the inn, plans to have two trees on the property removed and to take down an elevated wooden platform from its outdoor beer garden area, councilman Dave Szakelyhidi said.

The wooden platform will be replaced with a patio area with concrete pavers that will be covered by a seasonal canvas tent measuring 20 feet by 40 feet.

The tent area will expand the restaurant’s seating capacity and give it the capability to hold private events outside, he said.

The tent would be up for six to eight months a year and will be a color designed to blend with its surroundings.

One resident, Diane Brenner of Spring Street, objected to having a tent in the borough’s historic district.

“I’m concerned about a giant circus tent in a historic town, and right smack in the middle of town. When you make a right-hand turn at the square and you go down the street you’re going to see a giant circus tent,” she said.

But resident Josh Meeder said he thinks the tent will be in good taste or McCafferty would not have proposed it.

“I trust in Bob doing the right thing for the town. He has been very conscientious,” he said.

The borough has no authority to rule on whether or not the business can have the trees removed, but it has the right to refuse architectural changes of buildings in the historic district, council President Greg Such said.

After reviewing photographs of what the tent will look like, council voted to allow it.
