Armstrong County blaze kills man, 42

APPLEWOLD — Authorities say a man was killed in a fire in a duplex.

Officials in Armstrong County say the blaze was reported in the residence in Applewold at about 6:41 p.m. Saturday.

Chief Mark Feeney of the East Franklin Volunteer Fire Department said a woman and three children managed to escape, but the man went up to the second floor.

Rescue teams found him on the floor in a second-floor bedroom. He was taken to ACMH Hospital near Kittanning, where he was pronounced dead.

County coroner Brian Myers identified him as 42-year-old David Hozier of Applewold. An autopsy is planned. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Gun accidentally fires during Mass

ALTOONA — Police and the district attorney are reviewing whether charges will be filed against a man whose gun accidentally fired during an Easter vigil Mass.

Altoona police aren’t identifying the man who was grazed by the bullet about 11 p.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.

Officer Christy Heck said the gun’s safety apparently was not on when the man stood up from kneeling, causing the gun to snag on his pants and fire. The man has a license for the gun and was carrying it legally.

Sgt. Marshall Worling said police and the Blair County district attorney’s office are consulting to determine what, if any, charges the man will face.

The gunshot occurred about 15 minutes before the end of Mass. The bullet lodged in the floor.

Home invasion victim identified

WEST MIFFLIN — Authorities have released the name of a man killed in a home invasion shooting that also injured a woman.

The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office said Isaac Cameron, 23, was pronounced dead shortly after 4:30 a.m. Saturday. Police in West Mifflin say he was shot multiple times in his home shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday. A woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor wounds.

Detectives have said there was more than one assailant, but no arrests have been reported.

Professor to plead guilty to child porn

ERIE — A former award-winning literature professor was scheduled to plead guilty to federal charges that he distributed, received and possessed child pornography.

Kirk Nesset, 57, resigned from Allegheny College in Meadville after he was arrested Oct. 1. He was indicted by a federal grand jury and today was scheduled to plead guilty before a federal judge in Erie.

According to an FBI complaint, an agent traced computer files shared in a peer-to-peer network to Nesset’s computer address in August. Authorities said a search of Nesset’s external hard drive revealed thousands of images and movies, some showing men having sex with girls.

ID given of man fatally shot in car

PITTSBURGH — Authorities have identified a man fatally shot in a car near a Pittsburgh police station.

The dead man is 20-year-ol Christopher Richardson.

Police said officers at the city’s Zone 2 station responded to gunshots and found a bullet-riddled vehicle and three occupants running away from it. Richardson was one of those men.

His autopsy is today.
