Parade scheduled for anniversary

ZELIENOPLE — The committee organizing a celebration for the 175th anniversary of the borough is still seeking people, vehicles and floats for its parade.

As of the committee’s meeting last week, the parade still needs many of its anticipated participants to register.

A permit has been filed with the state to close off part of Main Street from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, said Mayor Tom Oliverio.

To properly organize and queue the entrants, they all must register by filling out a form and submitting it to the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau.

“It’s coming along, right now we probably have a 20-minute parade, so we need people to register,” said Jack Cohen, executive director of the tourism bureau.

The parade will start with horses and older vehicles and progress through time with newer vehicles, floats and community groups. Fire engines and police vehicles will bring up the rear.

It will also feature Jeeps, musical and performing acts and historical re-enactors.

In addition to the actual parade, the committee is planning additional entertainment for that day, Oliverio said.

The committee has hired two women to circulate the sidewalks. One will walk on stilts while another will hand out balloon animals to children.

From 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., before the parades starts, the English Lutheran Church, 200 E. Grandview Ave., will offer free coffee and doughnuts to veterans and their spouses.

The deadline to register for the parade is May 15.
