MINNEAPOLIS — Target is raising the minimum wage for its hourly workers next month to at least $9 an hour, following a similar decision by Walmart.

The Minneapolis-based retailer declined to disclose what it is currently paying employees, citing a long-standing policy.

“We make sure we’re competitive in every marketplace in which we do business,” said Molly Snyder, a Target spokesman.

Last month, Walmart said it will raise wages of workers to at least $9 an hour starting in April and to $10 an hour by February 2016. In total, Walmart said it will raise the pay of nearly 40 percent of its work force.

The move pressured other retailers to follow suit. Soon after, the parent company of T.J. Maxx and Marshalls said it would also hike its entry-level wages to $9 an hour.
